This film reveals how globalisation is accelerating climate change, destroying jobs, fraying the fabric of communities and adding to the stress of modern life. Most importantly it shows that these trends can be reversed and that a better world is within our reach.

Free eco-driving lessons

In these difficult times of changing climate and peak oil, it behoves us all to be aware of how responsible we are in our use of the world’s dwindling resources.

Car owners are, by definition, consumers of oil and polluters of the air that we all breathe and ought therefore to be particularly conscious of their car use.

Transition Malvern Hills offers a free session with qualified trainers to car-owners who want to save money and become more green. This is for any car owner living within the Malvern Hills AONB area (map at http://www.malvernhillsaonb.org.uk/map.html).

The only entry requirements are a readiness to learn, and a willingness to help find other people to participate in the scheme!

Energy Tracers survey

in
Energy Tracers, a project of Transition Malvern Hills, is running a scheme to help people make their houses more energy efficient.

How it works

The household to be thermal imaged is required to heat the house to 10 degrees hotter than outside. A fan is fitted to an outside door and some hot air is sucked out so that cold air from outside is sucked in. The surveyor then goes round the house with a thermal imaging camera which picks up any leaks and draughts.
 
The householder then gets a CD with dialogue and notes and can choose how to deal with problems. The householder also gets a box with monitoring equipment to check just how much power different pieces of equipment are using. There is also advice available for sorting out problems.
 

How it is organised

 
We are looking for Hotspotters who find 3 or 4 other friends / neighbours who are interested. The surveyor will Thermal Image the Hotspotter's house first and then the Hotspotter will accompany the surveyor to the other 4 houses. The schedule is tight as each house takes no more than 2 hours. The houses must be 15 minutes max travelling distance from each other in a car.

Within local limits, the normal £50 householder charge does not apply (thanks to funding from Malvern Hills AONB).

Hot Tips from Doris

Doris from Malvern is 100 years old and has given us these 'Hot Tips' for keeping warm in winter.
 

Clothes

Choose Natural Fibres.
Use a number of Layers.
Wear Underclothes.
All clothes worn should be large enough
                For example: Long socks and tops long enough to 'tuck in' covering the lower back)
Have a Seasonal wardrobe.
Wear Bed socks and use an under blanket. 
 

Lifestyle

Maintain regular exercise.
Do more tasks yourself without relying on powered tools and appliances.
Ensure you get plenty of sleep.
Try to remain content and relaxed.
 

Food

Always have breakfast - Porridge in the winter.
Have regular meals.
Seasonal diet including Soups and Stews.
Serve small portions and have a winter pudding for example using suet, treacle or pudding rice.
Use Ginger in hot water for a drink or use in other recipes.

Windows and Doors

Close curtains early especially in rooms not in use.
Utilise the sunlight and its warmth in rooms that face it.
Exclude drafts as much as possible.
 

Insulation

Make sure your roof space and cavity walls are insulated if you have them.
 

Heating

Dress warm rather than cranking up the heat.
Use economically, either low in the background or not at all.
Lower the thermostat a few degrees.
